This video demonstrates our simple 30-inch wide DIY Grow tray shelving unit and how we manage lettuce growth within the unit to maximize space and light. To create your own unit, use 75-watt Equivalent Daylight Spectrum LED Bulbs for the lighting, 10-Gallon Sterilite Stacker Totes (Modular Stacker line), 3-Inch Widlip Netpots, Hydroton Clay Pellets Grow Medium and 1-Inch Rockwool Cubes.
To build your unit, first measure the distance between the shelves in your shelving unit to make sure you have enough height between your trays. You need a minimum of 30 inches in width to accommodate 10-gallon grow trays and 16 inches between the shelves to provide enough height for your plant growth. Next you will need to drill nine 3-inch holes in the lids of your Sterilite trays to place your plants in the trays.
After cleaning out the plastic shavings from drilling out the holes, you are ready to add your water. Fill approximately 6 gallons per tray (slightly over the half-way mark), check to make sure the water level rests approximately 1/4 inch above the base of your netpots. Next fill each netpots with one 1-Inch Rockwool Cube and Hydroton to keep the cube stable. Finally add your MaxiGrow Nutrients to the water (1 tsp per Gallon of Water), and seed your pre-soaked Rockwool Cubes. Ziptie your Clamplights to the sides of your trays, Keep at least 10 hours of light on your plants each week and your plants will be ready to harvest within 2 months.
